Posts: February 3, 2026
The disappearance of Laci Peterson on Christmas Eve 2002 shocked a nation and captivated the world, becoming one of the most infamous missing-person cases of the early 2000s. Investigators, law enforcement, and the public scrambled for answers as the story unfolded, drawing intense media attention and widespread speculation. Amid the search efforts, tips, and mounting suspicion, it was impossible not to wonder about the woman at the heart of the case—who Laci Peterson was before tragedy struck, and the life she had been living in Modesto, California.
Who was Laci Peterson?
Laci Peterson was a woman known for her radiant smile and infectious laughter, the kind of person who drew people in effortlessly and left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Born in May 1975, she had a close-knit circle of friends and a family who adored her. At eight months pregnant, Laci was eagerly preparing for the next chapter of her life, excited about becoming a mother and sharing the joys of the season with her loved ones. She and Scott Peterson had built a life together in Modesto, California, in the La Loma district, filled with plans, traditions, and the small, meaningful moments that define everyday happiness. Laci Peterson: Case Background
On the morning of December 24, 2002, Laci Peterson, eight months pregnant, was at her home on Covina Avenue in Modesto, California with her husband Scott Peterson. They watched her favorite show Martha Stewart before heading in their different directions. Scott had intended to go golfing that day, however it was too cold in his opinion so he decided to take his boat out to go fishing. Laci intended to clean, bake some cookies and take their dog McKenzie for a walk.
Scott, a fertilizer salesman, had a shop for work and used it to store his boat he purchased on December 9, 2002. He left his home on Covina avenue, drove to his shop, answered some work emails and arrived at Berkeley Marina around 90 miles from home at 11:59 am verified by phone records and receipts. He purchased a marina ticket at 12:54 p.m. and spent time on the boat fishing from approximately 12:55 p.m. to 2:11 p.m.
He was already on the way back home by 2:15pm when he called Laci and left her an uncharacteristically formal voicemail. Upon arriving home around 4:30pm Scott washed his clothes, showered, ate pizza, drank milk, ordered dirty tv and finally called Sharon Rocha Laci’s mother to see if Laci was with her. Sharon said she was not. Scott’s response was “well then she’s missing”.
Ron Grantski, Laci’s stepfather, called authorities to report that Laci was missing. Meanwhile, Laci’s car remained in the driveway, and her dog McKenzie was found earlier in the day unattended with the leash still attached. Neighbors observed the dog but did not see any other activity suggesting forced entry or a struggle.
By 9:55 p.m., law enforcement was called to investigate Laci’s disappearance. The house and surrounding area showed no immediate signs of a violent incident, and Scott Peterson’s behavior during the day—his movements, calls, and interaction with the dog—became a central focus for investigators in reconstructing the timeline of Laci’s last known whereabouts.
Attention was immediate. Friends, family, neighbors, and even complete strangers joined the search for Laci, determined to bring her home. As the search expanded, the investigation quickly grew into one of the most notorious cases in recent history, capturing national attention because it involved all of the elements that make a story unforgettable: a young, pregnant woman, a seemingly perfect marriage, and a disappearance that shocked an entire community.

🕵️ Sleuthing: How much detective work is needed to follow the trail. In this case, Scott’s behavior created so many questions we didn’t know which way to look.
⚡️ Intensity: Details about how Laci was killed and the motive behind the crime remain unclear, leaving many critical questions unanswered.
