Kathleen Peterson Case: Key Witnesses and Suspects
Posts: November 10, 2026
When Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in her Durham, North Carolina, home on December 9, 2001, her death sparked one of the most debated murder investigations in recent American history. Her husband, Michael Peterson, maintained that she had fallen down the stairs, while prosecutors argued that he had murdered her. As the case moved toward trial, investigators, forensic specialists, family members, and other witnesses became central to competing accounts of what happened. Among them was SBI bloodstain analyst Duane Deaver, whose testimony later came under serious scrutiny, as well as neighbors and experts whose interpretations challenged the prosecution's explanation. The case also attracted attention because of the unusual owl theory, which offered a different possible explanation for Kathleen's injuries. In this second installment of our Kathleen Peterson case investigation, we'll examine the key witnesses, major figures, and people whose statements helped shape the trial and the continuing debate surrounding her death.

The Suspects, Witnesses, and Key Figures
The Kathleen Peterson case involved far more than one accused man and one tragic death. At the center was Michael Peterson, whose account of what happened to his wife became the focus of a criminal investigation and a highly publicized trial. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, medical experts, forensic specialists, and investigators all played critical roles in shaping the case presented to the jury. Kathleen’s family members and those who knew the couple also provided context about their lives and relationships, while expert witnesses disagreed over what the injuries and physical evidence could reveal about her final moments. Each person brought a different perspective, but not every statement carried the same weight, and not every disagreement established what had happened. As we examine the key figures, we’ll separate established facts from allegations, consider how testimony influenced the trial, and explore why certain witnesses and pieces of evidence remain central to ongoing debate about Kathleen’s death.
