Kathleen Peterson: How Could a Fall Down the Stairs Cause Such Severe Injuries?
Posted: November 3, 2026
On December 9, 2001, Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in her home in Durham, North Carolina. Her husband, Michael Peterson, told investigators that he had found her after returning from outside. What initially appeared to be a tragic death soon became a complex homicide investigation.
Disputes over the physical evidence, competing explanations for her injuries, and questions about the investigation would eventually turn the Peterson case into one of the most closely examined criminal trials in recent history. But before the courtroom battles and forensic controversies, there was Kathleen herself—a woman whose life deserves to be remembered beyond the circumstances of her death.
Who was Kathleen Peterson?
Kathleen Peterson was a successful businesswoman, wife, and mother who built a life in North Carolina. She worked as an executive at Nortel Networks, where she held a senior position in the company's telecommunications business. Friends and colleagues described her as intelligent, driven, and accomplished.
She was married to novelist and former newspaper columnist Michael Peterson, and together they shared a blended family. Kathleen's professional success and family life made her death especially shocking to those who knew her. As investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding her final hours, the focus shifted from the woman she had been to the unanswered questions surrounding how she died.

Case Background: Starting from the beginning.
Kathleen Peterson: The Night She Was Found at the Bottom of the Stairs
December 9, 2001 — Durham, North Carolina
On a quiet December night in Durham, North Carolina, Kathleen Peterson's life came to a sudden and tragic end. In the early hours of December 9, 2001, an emergency call brought police and paramedics to the Peterson family home. Inside, Kathleen lay at the bottom of a staircase, gravely injured and surrounded by blood.
Her husband, Michael Peterson, told emergency dispatchers that she had fallen down the stairs. What followed was an investigation that would eventually attract international attention. But before the theories, forensic disputes, and courtroom proceedings, there was one night that changed the lives of everyone connected to the Peterson family.
The Evening of December 8, 2001
According to Michael Peterson's later account, he and Kathleen spent the evening of Saturday, December 8, together at their home. They watched the movie American Sweethearts and celebrated news that one of Michael's books had been optioned for a possible film. The couple drank wine and later spent time outside near their swimming pool.
Michael said they talked together for several hours. Kathleen had a work conference call scheduled for Sunday morning, December 9, so she eventually decided to go inside. According to his account, Kathleen went into the house to get ready for bed while Michael remained outside, staying by the pool for some time before eventually returning inside.
The exact events during the period between Kathleen going inside and Michael finding her would become a central question in the investigation. There were no eyewitnesses who could establish what happened during that interval.
The Discovery at the Bottom of the Stairs
In the early hours of December 9, Michael Peterson said he went inside and discovered Kathleen at the bottom of a staircase. He described finding her badly injured and lying in a large amount of blood, and he immediately contacted emergency services for help.
At approximately 2:40 a.m., Michael called 911. He told the dispatcher that his wife had fallen down the stairs and was still breathing, but unconscious. When asked how many stairs she had fallen down, he struggled to give an exact number.
The emergency call was frantic as Michael repeatedly asked for help and urged the dispatcher to send someone quickly. The first call ended, but Michael called 911 again moments later to report that Kathleen was no longer breathing.
Emergency Responders Arrive
Durham County paramedics arrived approximately seven to eight minutes after the initial emergency call, and Michael's son, Todd Peterson, also arrived around the same time. Responders entered the home and found Kathleen at the bottom of the staircase, noting a significant amount of blood on the scene.
Michael was at the home when emergency personnel arrived, and paramedics quickly assessed Kathleen, but she could not be saved. The scene was no longer simply an emergency medical response; with Kathleen dead and the circumstances still unclear, authorities needed to establish what had happened inside the home.
The Initial Police Investigation
Durham police officers responded to the home and began documenting the circumstances surrounding Kathleen's death. Investigators observed blood inside the residence and on the walkway leading toward the front entrance, meaning the amount of blood and overall scene required further examination.
An investigator from the Durham Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division was notified during the early morning hours and arrived at the Peterson residence to assess the scene. Authorities worked to document the home's layout and preserve potential evidence, requiring a closer look at Kathleen's injuries, the staircase, and the surrounding areas.
At this stage, the central task was to determine how Kathleen had sustained her injuries and what had happened before emergency services were called.
Kathleen Peterson's Death
Kathleen Peterson died on December 9, 2001, at the age of 48. Her death was initially reported as the result of a fall down the stairs, based on Michael Peterson's account of finding her.
However, the medical examination identified several severe lacerations to her scalp and head. Although they found no trauma to her skull in the form of blunt force trauma, the medical examiner determined that her death resulted from blood loss associated with those injuries.
The circumstances surrounding those injuries would soon become the focus of intense scrutiny. Investigators needed to understand how Kathleen had been injured, how long she had been at the bottom of the staircase, and what had happened inside the home that night.
Those questions would lead to years of investigation, disputed forensic evidence, and one of the most widely discussed criminal cases in modern American true-crime history. Kathleen Peterson was 48 years old when her life ended inside her own home, leaving questions that would remain in the public eye for decades.
