The Morning Amy Bradley Vanished

The night of March 23, 1998, appeared to be an ordinary night of vacation aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas. Amy Bradley, her brother Brad, and other passengers spent time around the ship as it traveled from Aruba toward Curaçao. In the early morning hours of March 24, Amy and Brad were at the ship’s disco, the Viking Lounge. At approximately 3:35 a.m., the siblings returned to their family’s cabin. Brad eventually went to bed, while Amy remained outside on the cabin’s balcony after saying she didn’t feel well and wanted to stay out in the open air. What happened during the next couple of hours would become the foundation of one of the most perplexing missing-person cases in cruise-ship history.

According to her father, Ron Bradley, he awoke sometime around 5:15–5:30 a.m. and saw Amy resting on the balcony. All he could see at the time was her legs. This is generally regarded as the last time a member of her family saw her. At approximately 6:00 a.m., Ron woke again and discovered that Amy was gone. Her shoes and a yellow polo shirt she had been wearing were left on a chair in the room, and there was no obvious explanation for why a 23-year-old woman would suddenly leave the cabin. At the time, the Rhapsody of the Seas was arriving in Curaçao, meaning the ship was transitioning from the open sea toward its port of call.

Ron Bradley initially believed there might be a simple explanation for Amy’s absence. After seeing her asleep on the balcony around 5:15–5:30 a.m., he woke again to discover that she was gone. Thinking she may have simply gotten up to walk around the ship or get a cup of coffee, Ron began searching the common areas. But as the minutes passed and he couldn't find his daughter, his concern turned into panic. He returned to the cabin and alerted the rest of the family. By approximately 6:30 a.m., the Bradleys had notified the ship’s crew that Amy was missing.

The timing could not have been more critical. The Rhapsody of the Seas was arriving in Curaçao, and thousands of passengers were preparing to leave the ship for the day. The Bradleys pleaded with crew members to keep passengers on board, prevent the gangways from being opened, and make an announcement asking anyone who had seen Amy to come forward. They wanted the ship treated as a contained search area before anyone had the opportunity to leave. According to the family, however, their requests were initially rejected, with crew members telling them that it was too early to make an announcement because it could disturb the other passengers.

Then came the moment that would become one of the most controversial aspects of the entire case: the ship docked, and passengers were allowed to disembark. The Bradleys watched as vacationers gathered their belongings and walked off the ship while their daughter was still missing somewhere—or potentially no longer—on board. A ship-wide announcement was eventually made at approximately 7:50 a.m., asking Amy to report to the Purser’s Desk, but by then a large portion of the passengers had already left the vessel.

For the Bradley family, the decision to allow passengers to leave became an agonizing question that has remained part of the controversy surrounding Amy’s disappearance: What might have been discovered if the ship had been temporarily secured before passengers were allowed to leave? If Amy was still somewhere aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas, every person who walked down the gangway represented a potential witness—and potentially, in the family’s worst fears, someone who could have had information about what happened to her. The ship would eventually be searched, but the crucial window between Amy’s disappearance and the beginning of a serious search had already begun to close.
